Philosophy Of Worship
Worship, which is ascribing value and worthiness to God, should “re-present” the Gospel story. The Gospel is that, “we are far more wicked than we ever dared to believe, but through Jesus Christ we are more loved than we ever dared to dream.” Since this is the major thrust of the Bible, then our worship service should “re-present” that truth. Thus we use what is known as liturgy or various elements to help unfold this drama of God’s love for sinful people. In addition, liturgy can be used as an aid in seeing worship as a dialogue.
The Message of Grace:
Redeemer Redmond stresses the classic Gospel message – that sinners are forgiven and accepted by God through faith in Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 5:17-21)—is a power that can transform anyone and any culture it touches. Therefore, we stress grace and the gospel; not simply rules and history.
We want people to see how thoroughly the Gospel penetrates, transforms, and applies to every area of their lives. The gospel isn’t merely applicable at conversion but rather applies on a daily basis. Forgetting this truth leads to a faith focused on trying harder, doing better or simply being pleasant. Religion produces nice people while the gospel produces new people. The gospel is about a whole new life, a new object of worship. No longer do we worship ourselves but Christ. Once that foundational change occurs, every aspect of life is altered because Jesus Christ is the Lord over all. His gospel brings life and we therefore expect comprehensive transformation—in community, in marriage, in family, in relationship, in career, in the Eastside.
Community of Grace:
Our community will be based on the grace and freedom of the gospel. Yet it is important to observe that this grace calls not for the absence of but rather the pursuit of holiness; grace is the catalyst for viewing God’s law as beautiful and his forgiveness as necessary.
Gospel Shaped Vision:
The Gospel serves as a catalyst to reach, serve and love those who do not yet know the Lord. Out of a deep sense of gratitude to the Lord for his saving grace we will seek to respectfully share the good news with those who do not yet know the Lord. Thus we will, in addition to strengthening those in the church, seek to be outward focused. Evangelism must consist of ‘real relationships’ with ‘real acts of service.’ Non-Christians will be expected, welcomed, and respected, with all their questions, objections, struggles, and doubts. We must strive to abolish an ‘us’ versus ‘them’ mentality and inculcate the correct biblical view of the Kingdom of God extending to every square inch of Redmond, the eastside and beyond.
